Review 265: 17.12.2021 at 05:00 pm
This is the LG QNED Mini-LED 99 Series screen, it is a premium 8K screen with MiniLED technology. This screen will offer deep blacks especially with HDR. It also supports 120Hz refresh rate. It also comes with different sizes, but the version I have here is 75″. The technologies in this screen make the screen of the future.
Peace be upon you all guys, This is your host, OTTO magazine. At the end of this review, I’ll discuss the pros and cons of this screen. If you’re reading now this article, then you’re eager to know about screens’ technology or you want to buy a new one. In this review, I’ll discuss the technologies packed in this screen and price map of screens in the future. Make sure to read this review all until the end.
The screen comes with a nearly silver frame, it also comes with bases at each end to fixate it on a table. The hight of the bases is ideal to place a sound bar beneath the screen. The design is ideal. Most screens come with the same design these days.
The screen uses an IPS panel, which is known to offer better viewing angles. It also offers more natural colors compared to other LED panels. But it offers less deep blacks compared to VA panels. Despite that, LG supported new technologies to offer deep blacks compared to other IPS panels. The screen used LED lights, which offers high brightness. And it’ll be great for dark and/or bright scenes.
Mini-LEDs offer better deep blacks compared to regular LEDs. This means it is better for contrast and deep blacks. WIth this technology only certain LEDs will light up. For example, if there’s a moon scene, only the LEDs within the moon will light up. And like I mentioned before, this will increase the contrast and deep blacks.
The screen supports a technology called Quantum Nano Cell Color. This technology merges the Quantum Dot and Nano Cell technologies together. This results in showing clearer photos with beautiful colors. It’ll also help in offering deep black color. This results in an excellent viewing experience.
The screen supports a technology called HDR 10 Pro, which helps in offering more vivid colors. It also supports a technology called Dolby Vision IQ. Which adjusts the screen’s settings depending on the content and the environment. For example, if you’re watching content in day time, the contrast and brightness will automatically increase. And the vise versa with night time viewing.
The screen comes with the A9 CPU, which also supports 8K resolution. This CPU uses algorithms and machine learning to enhance the content. The CPU also helps in upscaling content.
For example, 2K content will be upscaled to look like a higher resolution. After experimenting with this screen, it offered vivid and natural colors. Light leakage is unnoticed in most conditions. It is still can be seen if the room is very dark.
We tested this screen in the dark room here, and it was good. Deep blacks were medium. The brightness was high, and made a huge difference with Dolby Vision and HDR supported content.
The screen is great for all conditions, especially when placed in the living room or places with natural light. 4K content is great on this screen, since it gets upscaled to 8K using the A9 CPU.
We tested content from Netflix, YouTube and BluRay disks, and all of them offered excellent resolution. 8K content was amazingly high resolution. And since it supports 8K, this screen is considered a long-term investment. But these days, 8K content is rare. 8K isn’t as popular as 4K. The screen supports HDMI 2.1 ports, which means it supports 4K@120fps or 8K@60fps. The screen supports the VRR technology to sync frames with the refresh rate. This feature isn’t officially available yet, but it’s coming with a future update.
This HDMI port means that the screen supports ALLM technology, which automatically recognizes gaming consoles. This technology also cancels all processings in the screen to increase the responsiveness while gaming. It also supports eARC port, which means that you connect high performance home theaters to the screen.
We tested the PS5 and Xbox Series X devices with this screen. Both of them offered high performance, but let me discuss the details:
The screen supports a mode called Game Enhancer, which allows you to know settings games require to work properly. It also shows the frames rate, and shows whether the ALLM technology is activated or not. It also changes the settings of the screen depending on the game. CoD Black Ops Cold War worked with high responsiveness with 120Hz refresh rate.
In general, the results were very satisfactory. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut game started with high performance, great colors and high responsiveness. The same results apply to the Demon’s Souls and Resident Evil 8 games. WIth the Xbox, Gears 5 game started with high contrast and beautiful colors with 120Hz refresh rate. The performance in general was excellent. The same thing applies to the Forza Horizon 5 game.
The game offered vivid colors and high responsiveness. The results were very satisfactory. This screens works perfectly and offers the highest performance with gaming consoles. The screen supports playing different content using external flash drives and hard disks. It runs MP4, MKV and can run subtitles without needing a third party player. The screen runs the new WebOS, which now comes with menus layout. It runs the same OS as the LG C1 screen, which I previously reviewed.
The C1 screen could also be a great option for you. The OS is simple and easy to use and runs different apps like Netflix, Youtube, Apple TV and others. You can control the screen using the Magic Remote. Speaking of Apple, those who bought a new LG screen from 2016 can get a free 3 months Apple TV subscription.
Communicate with LG representatives to get this offer, . You can also control the green using the arrow buttons available on the remote. The remote controller supports NFC, which allows you to connect it to your smartphone and broadcast content to the screen. This feature will only work if the LG ThinQ app is installed on your device.
The screen also supports Apple’s AirPlay feature to broadcast Apple devices on the screen. It also supports Apple’s HomeKit feature to manage your smart appliances. It also supports LG’s ThinQ, which works similarly to Apple’s HomeKit. The screen supports LG’s AI Sound technology. This technology uses AI to adjust the audio depending on the shown content. It also supports Dolby Atmos audio system. The audio system comes with 4.2 channels and 60W. After experimenting with it, the audio this screen produces is excellent.
The subwoofer was very good. The audio your’e listening to now is coming from the next room. In general, the audio system on this screen won’t disappoint you at all. The screen supports bluetooth 5 and WiFi. It comes with 4x HDMI 2.1 ports. It also comes with 3x USB ports, LAN port, Output port, headphone jack among others.
The LG QNED 99 Series screen is available in Middle east with a price that starts from 5862 USD for the 75″ version. The 83″ version costs nearly 7994 USD.
Pros:
It supports 8K resolution, which means this screen is an excellent long-term investment. Since the screen is Mini-LED, the brightness is very high. It is a great gaming screen since it supports HDMI 2.1 with 4K@120fps and 120Hz refresh rate. The audio experience is perfect when compared to other screens.
Cons:
It offers deep blacks, but I wished it competed with other screens that offer higher deeper blacks. The VRR technology isn’t yet supported. But it could come with a future software update. The OS might be a little buggy, but software updates will fix it.
This is screen is a high investment, but LG continues to offer us great products. I am excited for more screens similar to it. This would be great for users to choose the screen that suits them the most.
See you later.
