This is the review to watch if you’re planning on expanding your PS5 storage.
What are the supported storages?
How to expand the PS5 storage?
And how to play games stored on external storages using PS5?

Most gamers have a PS5, but unfortunately, the device’s storage isn’t enough for all of our games. The current storage option of the PS5 is 825GB. Most games’ sizes are between 50GB to 150GB, which quickly takes most of the onboard storage of the device. One of these games is Call of Duty.

In this review, I’ll show you how to upgrade your PS5 storage step by step. I’ll up the storage to 2TB in this review The storage you have to use has to be SSD M.2 Gen 4. Some users reported that Gen 3 also works with the PS5, but Sony recommends using Gen 4 storages. There are lots of storage options with PS5 support that you can choose from. There’s a dedicated website from Sony to show supported storages.

For me, I’ll use a Kingston storage. We’ve used this Kingston storage to upgrade the PS5, and it’s been working pretty well.

Let’s start with the steps. First thing you have to do is to lay down the device and make sure the PS logo if facing the floor. The power button has to be in the opposite direction. You can then add pressure to the top left and bottom right corners of the device. And then push the cover to the outside to release it. You’ll then see the external storage slot. You’ll need a regular screwdriver to unscrew the metal plate, and then you’ll see the expandable storage slot.

Now you can install the external storage. You’ll find 5 different sized slots. One of these sizes fits the Kingston storage. There’s a screw that you also have.to remove, but don’t lose the copper spacer. This spacer must to be reinstalled later. I advise you to use a heatsink with the external storage to help in dissipating heat from the storage. This will ensure longer playing sessions without harming the storage from heat. These heatsinks are cheap. I bought the heatsink from Amazon. It comes with a thermal pad, where the storage must be placed between it and the heatsink.

This will ensure that the heat will be dissipated in a balanced way. First you have to remove the sticker from the storage, apply the thermal pad and then add the heatsink. Then make sure your external storage is placed in its right slot. Make sure that the storage is applied correctly.

You have to add the spacer now, and then gently add the external storage, and push it inside. If you felt pressure or the storage isn’t functioning well, then there’s something wrong in the process. However, t is easy to do. You can then screw in the storage to fixate on the device. You can then apply the cover with the same method you removed it. And now, you’ve upgraded the storage of your PS5. Once you finished, turn on the device. You’ll get a message that a new M.2 storage has been applied and it needs formatting. All you have to do then is to format the storage and it’ll then work perfectly.

And now since the storage is applied, you can move your games on it and start playing. You can play games stored on the external storage. What if you want to expand the storage even more without losing your files?

In this case, you have to use an external SSD storage. I’ll use the Kingston XS 2000, which offers high reading and writing speeds that can reach up to 2000Mbps. The size of this storage is 1TB, which is enough to move your files from the old storage. Connect the storage to the PS5 using the USB-C port and the original cable to ensure high writing speeds.

Go to the PS5 menu, Storage and you’ll get 4 options. The first option is the Device’s Storage, the second option is the M.2 SSD Storage. The third option is the External USB Storage. The fourth option is installation location. This option will allow you to choose where to install the storage, and I’ll explain it later in this review.

You can then go to the M.2 option and transfer the files in it to the external SSD storage. Then follow the same steps as before to up the storage. You can then transfer the files from the external storage to the new M.2 storage. If you have a PS5, you’ll need this video at some point. Share this review with those who have a PS5 device.

Some users prefer to use an external Hard Disk. You can use an external storage to store games on it. But you cannot play games from these storages. You’ll have to transfer the game from the external storage to the onboard storage or the M.2 storage to be able to play them.

Let me now explain how the Installation location option. This option allows you to store games on either the onboard storage of the M.2 storage. Using this option, you can play PS4 games stored on external SSD storage using the PS5 device. This will provide more space for you for a cheaper cost.

The PS5 is a new device, and games are getting bigger and bigger requiring more storage. . . See you later.
